If you've been with us for a while, you know we've been running a series on different forms of advertising each week. Since we all know that advertising is absolutely essential to our success in business, it's not a matter of whether to advertise but how. Careful choice of your advertising methods should leave you within your budget and still project the image appropriate for your business.

Portraying a professional image to your customers is an asset to any type of business regardless of size. Given the pervasiveness of good word processing programs, low-cost graphics software, even shareware, you can set up top-notch letterhead, business cards, etc. on a shoestring budget. If you don't own a laser printer, you may want to take your work to the local printer (see issue #4 for printing tips).

1. Printing your letterhead and envelopes shows customers that you're a professional giving them confidence in you and your product or service. Printed stationery can be necessary when purchasing materials or equipment from wholesalers and suppliers.

2. Business cards are a must when you're networking with other professionals. Make sure to always have a supply handy to give to interested people you meet. Even though they may not appear to be a potential customer, they may be able to refer someone to you at a later time. Remember to file their card in a prospects file with a few notes about your conversation. Your ability to call to mind a person's name, occupation, etc. goes a long way toward a professional image.

3. Regarding networking, it never hurts to drop a new acquaintance a note (on your professional letterhead) thanking them for their time. You and your business will stick in their minds the next time they need, or know someone who needs, your product or service.

By the year 2000 more and more people will be seeking creative funding for college and small business across the country. In today's world, SMALL and AWARENESS is the key to securing financial funding. Most can be found in your town and neighborhood. Most are not even awarded due to publicity. The company feels no need to advertise they offer such a thing so no one ever finds out about it. Receiving grants or financial backing is as close as your companies Human Resource Department. Some companies also offer to pay a portion of your tuition costs providing you meet the GPA requirements. With that note you could wind up paying little or no cost for attending a college in your area. So visit your Human Resource Department to explore all your company has to offer.

Other sources of financial backing and grants are listed throughout the Internet. Yes there are thousands of places to find grants. You could spend hours just going through lists of grants. The information can be overwhelming at times and can give you the impression that securing funding is not obtainable. But imagine if you are thinking this way how many others are thinking this way also? This means few grants ever have submissions and making your chances even greater for selection!

MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE

DIFFICULT PEOPLE??? by Bill Hodges, used by permission (c) August 1997

It would be Pollyannaish of me to try and tell you that there are no difficult people in this world, but I do believe that there have been too many books written about the art of dealing with them. There is no question that I believe the study of human nature is important for anyone who must deal with the public. However, we prejudice our research and the conclusions we reach when we start out with the premise that we are learning how to deal with "difficult" people. Other people, for the most part, are no different than we are.

Instead of labeling them as difficult and setting up a barrier, why not try to understand where they are coming from and make allowances for their differences. Here are some of the ways to work with those people with whom you feel conflict.

1. Be like a duck-Just as a duck sheds water without getting wet, you can do the same thing with disagreeable comments. Don't rise to the bait. Let the comment go unchallenged. Many conflicts can be avoided when we just refuse to fight.

2. Be patient-Timing is everything. In dealing with others we may have to bide our time until an appropriate opportunity to press our case appears. Be sure that you have the other party's full attention and that competing distractions are not going to be an aggravating factor in any conversation.

3. Look for common ground-Most of us, when we find someone who is pulling against us or at least appears to be doing so, have a tendency to concentrate on our differences rather than our similarities. When faced with that type of situation, see what you can both agree on and you may find that your goal is the same. Only the methods you are using to achieve it are different. In any case, by focusing on areas of agreement, you will improve the working atmosphere.

4. They can't be doing everything wrong-When we are in a conflict with others, we tend to defensively think of everything they do and say as wrong. Do not hesitate to compliment the other person when he or she does something right.

There is nothing more challenging than dealing with other human beings. The more cowardly among us do less dangerous and more solitary things like climbing mountains, sky diving, and bull fighting. However, the rewards are great for those who would learn to deal successfully with others. John D. Rockefeller, the American industrialist and philanthropist, said, "The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee. And I pay more for that ability than for any other under the sun." It seems that our challenge is not how to deal with so-called difficult people, but rather simply to learn how to keep them from becoming difficult in the first place.If we can do that, we always will be in demand.
