Since we all know that advertising is absolutely essential to our success in business, BCW will focus on a different form of advertising each week. Today's tip of the week will be the first of a series on modes of advertising. You can use any or all of these forms of advertising depending on the kind of image you want to project for your business and which delivers your message best to your target market.

Bulletin Boards:

Bulletin boards can be ideal for the small home-based business that wants to build a relationship with the sometimes overlooked local community. Since this is literally a free form of advertising, it is available everyone. Try posting professional-looking brochures, flyers or business cards at grocery stores, laundromats, drug store/pharmacies, restaurants, schools, apartment complexes, anywhere your target markets spends time. The purpose of these bulletin boards is to communicate needs/wants within the community. Get out there and start filling those needs/wants with your product or service.

How to Promote Your Web Site (If You Build It, Will They Come?) By Nancy Forbes of Forbes & Associates You have just had a beautiful web site designed, found a home to host your site and intend to make lots of money via the Internet. You register your site with the top 20 search engines. You then sit back and wait for the sales to come rolling in. A month goes by, then 2 months then 3 months. You haven't received any sales, a few emails and just a few visitors. Believe it or not, this is not an uncommon occurrence for the online marketer. The key to having a successful online business is promotion. Let me ask you a question. If you were going to open a business in your town, how successful do you think it would be if you didn't advertise and what would it cost? Advertising in the real world is expensive but it is a must if you want your business to succeed. The beauty of cyber world is online marketing does not have to cost you a lot of money. Marketing on the Internet is really no different than any other type of marketing; the same basic principles and objectives apply. You want to increase traffic at your location and you want to generate more sales. The primary goal of course is to generate sales. There are all kinds of resources on the Internet you can use to advertise without having to go broke in the process. Promotion is the key to your online success. You have to think of ways to make yourself unique, ways to stand out. You must have a marketing plan. The more active you are in the online community, the more you will be known. The rest of this article will be talking about what you can do to give yourself an online presence.

Probably the most effective means of generating additional traffic on  your web site is to give something for FREE to your visitors. If your intent is to just generate traffic then promote generically, then offer a free cd, book or tape. If you wish to generate more traffic with a higher level of interested prospects, then you must be more specific, example, free book on fishing if you have a fishing site or tourism site. Another way to get people to your site is by offering contest, free information or a free informative report. A lot of people surf the net looking for information. If you offer a free report with pertinent information about your industry, it will help you get visitors to your site. Advertise your free report aggressively in free classified ads, free for all links, newsgroups, and in email newsletters. All of this can be done at a very low cost. There are literally 1000's of places to advertise for free. You can do a search under free advertising to find places to advertise. The same is true with banner exchange ads. A banner ad is a banner that is placed on a web site that advertises your business. It is also a link. When someone clicks on your banner, they will be connected to your web site. There are free banner exchanges. Again you can do a search through yahoo, excite or other search engines to find all the different programs available. Newsgroups are another free way to advertise. Advertising is not allowed on a lot of the newsgroups. If you find a topic you are interested in and would like to participate in the discussion, the way you would advertise your business is through what is called a signature file. A signature file consists of 4-7 lines including the name of your company, address and telephone # (if you want to include it), your web site address and your email address. You can even include your business hours or something unique so people will remember you. You would always add your name to all of your correspondence, leave a space and then add your signature file. An example of a signature file would be ours below.

Some of the other tools you can use to promote your business online are electronic press releases (if you have something news worthy), electronic newsletters (ezines), web rings in your particular industry or interest, applying for awards, and what's new sites, even business chatrooms.

NO FEAR by Debra Borysewich

The fear that wastes time by inhibiting action. The same type of fear as stage fright.

1. Fear of not doing as well as you want to

2. Fear caused by lack of preparation

3. Fear of what others will think

4. Fear caused by early negative experiences

5. Lack of enjoyment of what you do because of 1 -4 above.

How do you perceive failure? To some people making mistakes is considered a failure. Can you imagine if we thought that when a toddler fell down while learning to walk was failure where we would be now! Instead, when a toddler falls, we do the opposite. We cheer them on and encourage them to try again, because we know that if they keep trying eventually they will get it. Steps towards a new goal or skill are simply efforts - not failures. No learning can take place without mistakes.

By constantly imagining your worst fears and deciding how you would overcome them; you can move on and have the courage to try to achieve the goals you fear. Fear of failure is tied closely to fear of success. If you blame others or circumstances when you fail, you take the focus off of what changes you have to make in order to succeed. There is security in staying right where you are instead of venturing into unknown territory. Instead of imagining the worst that could happen, why not try visualizing the best that could happen and how you might feel?

Become secure enough within yourself that you do not need to diminish others with jealousy. Take the time and energy you spend being jealous and put it into achieving whatever it is you really want. People who feel insecure get into the right/wrong battle - instead of raising their self image by being right, they alienate others by making them feel wrong. The person who is unable to take criticism is also unable to give it. They haven't developed a mature communication style that facilitates being honest and considerate at the same time. Those who can accept criticsm benefit immensely - they have the chance to evaluate the information given and decide if they can use it for growth. The one who can't accept criticism does not listen and therefore does not grow. A good response to criticism is "Thank you for your input, I will consider that." Table it and think about it later to determine the personal value.
