Diversify, Diversify, Diversify by Brian Welch
I am sure at one time or another you were told, that to successfully promote your business on the Web you need to diversify. The more sources of traffic you have the better off you are. I know that does not seem like a very profound statement since the idea has been floating around since the first salesperson tried to sell the wheel, but it is amazing that so many people seem to ignore this advice or simply do not take it seriously.
As the CEO of a well established Internet promotions business, my staff and I have helped many companies build a very successful online presence. In each and every case we built their business by diversifying their traffic.
By the same token, most people setting up shop on the Internet are doing so with limited money and limited personnel. You need to establish a plan of action. Figure out what services you are willing to pay for and what you can do on your own.
Currently most of our clients have gotten the best results from being at the top of the search engines and having an effective e-mail campaign. E-mail is easy and very effective. Placing classified ads in e-zines can bring you a lot of exposure at a low cost. If you have your own e-zine you can usually get a lot of free, targeted advertising by swapping ads with your fellow publishers.
If you want to come up at the top of the major search engines you have a lot of work ahead of you. It takes a lot of time to get your site to the top and once it is there, your job has just begun. There are thousands of people trying to get their site to the top, so it is a very competitive market. We usually tell our clients that if they are going to pay for anything, they should pay a search engine tech to get their site to the top and maintain it there. We have such a person on our staff and he has helped our business tremendously.
If you do decide to go that route, I would suggest finding a quality company that only charges you for the visitors they send you. Many companies will charge you a large setup fee and monthly fee, no matter how much traffic they actually generate for you.
So now what? You have a good e-mail campaign going plus you are getting regular targeted visitors from the search engines. Is that good enough? Heck no! There is so much more you can do to advertise your site. "Pay Attention to What You're Doing!"
Want to save some time? Here's the first and most important rule of time management. Quit worrying about how long it takes to get things done. Do them right the first time, and you'll save time fixing things later. You'll learn to do them faster as you gain experience.
Instead of asking yourself how long did/will this take, ask:
Do/did I really need to bother with this at all?
Simple stuff. And we all know it. How many times have you neglected to follow through on it lately? How much time have you spent on things that didn't have any purpose?
Think about everything you've done in the last 24 hours. How many things did you do, and even fret over, that could have been left undone with no problems later from them?

How to Prepare Yourself (and Your Business!) for the New Millennium By Sharon Tucci
Are you happy with your life right now? Are you on target for reaching your goals and objectives? Do you even have a set of goals and objectives? Perhaps you're so caught up in planning and thinking about what you want that you never get around to doing anything. I want to change all of this for you in one easy lesson.
I have always held an extreme fascination with what makes the difference between success and failure in people's lives. Succeeding at something I attempt has never been enough for me; I've always wanted to know how and why people in general succeed.
I've been a great student of the principles of the success - having devoured literally thousands of books dealing with virtually every aspect of personal development along with the psychological and physiological components of success. I've been a first-hand witness to dozens of major success stories in various areas of life; and a first-hand witness to hundreds of failures. Not being one to simply rely on the words and actions of others, I've constantly pushed myself to the edge, always setting my sights on things that would further challenge me. This has resulted in my own set of triumphs and failures for me to reflect upon.
This course of study has been somewhat confusing for me at times, as I can imagine it would be for most people. The confusion has come about because of the many contradictions I have seen and heard of. For example, in the area of goal setting - most authors profess that writing out a detailed action plan is an absolute must. Yet, in real life, very few successful people I have encountered have taken the time to do this. Another contradiction I've stumbled across is that many authors say all you need is a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) in order to succeed, yet I've found that most people who embrace this philosophy never have a tangible success!
In spite of the contradictions, I've been able to sort out some very basic principles that can make the difference between success and failure. Don't take my word for it! Read through the following list and pinpoint the areas you might be lacking in. Take these principles as your own and give them a chance to breathe life! I can guarantee you that in doing so, you are paving the way for your personal success in the new millennium!
1. The Self-Responsibility Principle: No one could care more about your life, happiness and well being than you could. Yes, there may be times when those closest to you want more for you than you do. However, human nature is such that people typically act with their own objectives in mind. Your success is contingent upon you and your actions.
Action Step: Remind yourself at least five times a day for the next 30 days that YOU need to take responsibility for your life and actions because no one else will.
2. The Personal Fulfillment Principle: Recognize that the number one reason for achieving something is *you* and your own sense of personal fulfillment in one or more areas of your life. Money, family, or any other external reason cannot be the reason for your doing something. In the short-term, other reasons may be a sufficient motivator, but they simply cannot work over the long-term.
Action Step: Ask yourself what the achievement of your goal will bring you in terms of personal fulfillment.
3. The Higher Order Principle: For the person trying to lose weight, it often feels like there is a never-ending battle between the "skinny" and the "fatty". Why does this happen? Simply put, because there are two (and sometimes more!) of you existing in the same body! Skinny wants to feel good about herself and is disciplined about food and exercise. Fatty, on the other hand, wants the instant gratification that food brings her and can always find something better to do than exercise.
In many cases where people fail to succeed, it is because on some level they derive satisfaction (pleasure) with continuing to do things the way they are being done now, and any deviation from this behavior is seen as bringing with it pain. People who achieve success are able to distinguish between priorities of different orders and can associate themselves with the priority of the highest order (what will bring them the most pleasure over the long-term).
I was only able to lose over 60 pounds when I recognized that the pleasures associated with losing weight outweighed (no pun intended!) the short-term benefits of avoiding exercise and eating the wrong foods. It only happened when I recognized that losing weight wasn't just about looking better and feeling better, but also about having more energy to enjoy life.
Action Step: Decide which priorities are of a higher order for you? Be forewarned: even if your goal is of a higher order, unless you live the "Pleasure-in-the-Process Principle," you will still not succeed.
4. The Pleasure-in-the-Process Principle: It is not enough to know you will derive pleasure from your end goal; you need to find pleasure in the everyday activities required to reach your objectives.
Action Step: Look at what is involved with reaching your objective and see how you do, or can, derive pleasure on a daily basis.
5. The No-Exception Principle: Realize that if you make an exception once, you will continue to do so until exceptions become the rule and your rule becomes the exception!
When I decided once and for all that I wanted to lose weight - and keep it off - I looked at what I had done in the past to see what worked and what didn't work. One of the things I discovered is that if I missed a day of exercise, I was likely to fall off my program. One day was all it took for me. Once I realized that I had to stop making excuses and engage in some form of physical activity every day, it became a downhill battle.
6. The Focus Principle: In order to succeed, you must become focused. We've all heard time and again, but consider whether or not YOU are focused on your objectives. If not, perhaps you do need to hear it again.
There is another part of this principle - you need to learn how to be focused on whatever it is that you are doing.
Action Step: Spend the bulk of your time on tasks that will bring you closer to your goals. Whenever you are doing something, use all of your concentration on that task. Live in the moment and don't let yourself become distracted!
7. The Reality Principle: You must come to terms with where you are right now in order to move ahead. You might be able to lie to other people, but you can never lie to yourself. Often when people take a hard look at the reality of their situation, this alone can be the driving force to propel them forwards.
Action Step: See the difference between where you are now and where you want to be and need to be in order to reach your goal.
8. The No-Choice Principle: Burn all your bridges!
Action Step: You've decided what it is that you want, now you need to leave yourself no alternative!
9. The Persistence Principle: One thing that many people will neglect to tell you about succeeding is that you WILL fail along the way. Failure is inevitable! However, you will not fail in the pursuit of your goal if you persist.
Action Step: To paraphrase Tony Robbins - If you try something and see that it doesn't work, then try something else. But keep trying! If continued efforts don't bring about the intended result, consider seeking professional assistance to get past this stumbling block.
10. The Law of Averages Principle: The law of averages dictates that if you work at something often enough, eventually you will succeed. In the case of goal achievement, the successes generally outweigh the failures over the long-term.
Action Step: Remind yourself constantly that the law of averages will eventually work in your favor.
11. The Moral & Ethical Being Principle: You need to understand that what you expect from circumstances and people must be in tune with your own set of morals and ethics. If what you are working towards is in disharmony with this, you can never truly be happy.
This principle is the major reason why so many people want to be in a better financial situation, yet they continue to subconsciously sabotage their own efforts. On some level or other, they equate riches with being against their own morals and ethics.
Action Step: You have two choices - you can either change your goals or you can consciously modify your morals and ethics.
12. The Priority Principle: Life can be overwhelming for many of us. There are only so many hours in a day and each of us have the same number of hours to work with. Successful people know how to distinguish between priorities and focus on those activities of a higher order. Oddly enough, when we start to prioritize activities by order, we find that only doing those higher order items will easily fill our days!
It is especially important to note that time out for creative thinking should always rank at the top of your list of priorities and be scheduled for the time of day when you are most able to focus.
Action Step: On a monthly, weekly and daily basis, prioritize your activities and act upon them based upon the highest order of long-term personal satisfaction.
13. The Time-Value Principle: As we all know, time is money. We need to know how much our time is worth. We also need to know that we should delegate whenever the cost (both monetary and otherwise) of someone else doing something is lower than the cost of doing it ourselves.
Action Step: Evaluate your personal involvement in activities based upon the opportunity-cost; and where appropriate, delegate.
14. The Knowledge & Skills Principle: Getting and improving upon knowledge and skills should be a high priority. A short cut is to find a mentor or personal coach.
Action Step: Determine the knowledge and skills you need to acquire to reach your goals; get them; and continually improve upon them.
15. The Assumption Principle: Most of us have learned this principle the hard way, yet few of us do anything about it. Simply put this principle says never, ever assume anything! I think the biggest mistakes I have made in life have come from making inappropriate assumptions.
Action Step: Make sure all parties involved agree about the meaning of something, and if necessary, get it in writing. Never make assumptions in your day-to-day life.
16. The Duplication Principle: This principle is the easiest to understand.
Action Step: When you find something that works, do it over and over again as long as it continues to work and continues to bring you closer to your goals. In essence, develop a system.
17. The Do Unto Others Principle: Never, ever do anything to anyone that you would not want done to you. As the saying goes, 'What goes around, comes around."
Action Step: Put this into practice on a daily basis by returning phone calls, making commitments you can keep, not making excuses to cover things up, etc.
18. Make it a Habit Principle: One of the most common reasons that people often fail to reach their goals after deciding what they want is that they try to do too many things at the same time. For instance, using the weight loss example, most diets fail because they expect people to totally change their pattern of eating (habit) at one time. When I was able to successfully lose weight, it was because I made one change at a time. Habits take time to develop - especially if you want them to be permanent.
Action Step: Try not to change more than one habit at a time. Decide which habit needs to be changed or developed first according to the higher order principle. Work at it until it becomes a natural part of your life. Only then should you try to make additional changes. Some habits can take days to develop or change; others can take weeks or months. Be patient! You'll know that something has truly become a habit when you no longer have to think about doing it - it will be automatic.
