"Tip of the Week"

Today's feature writer gets back to basics for writing good web pages. After all, your page IS the final destination for most of your customers and their decision about you will be made there. So after your content is up to snuff, it will be time to deal with the issue of traffic. Here's a few (technical) ideas for improving the odds:

Doorway Pages & Meta Tags for Search Engines by Rajesh V. Tavakari

What goes into the making of a doorway page?

First, you have to know that ranking criteria varies from search engine to search engine. Most evaluate the placement of keywords or keyword phrases on various parts of your pages based simultaneously on all these criteria:

1. Prominence of the keyword searched; how early in a page a keyword appears. 2. Frequency of the keyword searched; number of times the keyword appears. Be careful about this. Simply repeating the keyword will not work because grammatical structure and keyword weight also plays a role. 3. Site Popularity; a few search engines consider how popular your site is when ranking. 4. "Weight" of the keywords; that is the ratio of keywords to all other words. Each search engine has a threshold. If your page crosses that threshold, the engine labels it as Spam and ignores it. 5. Proximity of keywords; how close together the keywords are to each other, especially when the item searched for is a phrase. 6. Keyword Placement; these are the locations where an engine will look for the keyword, e.g. in the body, title, META tags, etc. 7. Grammatical structure; some engines consider grammar in their calculations. They do this to make it harder for spammers to do their thing. 8. Synonyms; some engines look for words similar in meaning to the keyword.

As you can see, the ranking criteria is highly dynamic, using a complex algorithm that integrates all the above factors in various proportions and with various maximum and minimum values. An important criteria to look deeper into is the keyword placement criteria. These are the various places that engines look for keywords:

Proper way of using Meta Tags

* Keywords in the <TITLE> tag(s) * Keywords in the <META NAME="DESCRIPTION"> * Keywords in the <META NAME="KEYWORD"> * Keywords in <H1> or other headline tags * Keywords in the <A HREF="http://yourcompany.com/page.htm"></A> link tags * Keywords in the body copy * Keywords in ALT tags * Keywords in <!-- insert comments here> comments tags * Keywords contained in the <INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN" NAME="HIDDEN" VALUE="include list of keywords here"> the hidden type tag. * Keywords contained in the URL or site address, e.g., http://www.keyword.com/keyword.htm

To fully cover the process of figuring out the parameters of each criteria for each search engine is beyond the scope of this manual. Simply put, there are several ways to come up with the text statistics you need to make good doorway pages. If you were doing this manually, you would need to do a search on a keyword or phrase in a search engine and see what page ranks highest for that keyword or phrase. We make sure that the actual page is the same one displayed in the search results and not a redirected page or a newer page. Then meticulously inspect that page and create a doorway page that beats that page on all the above criteria, without going too far as to cross the engines thresholds.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Is Anyone Bookmarking Your Website?

by Diane Leonte

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many articles have you read in the past few months which revealed the most effective ways for you to drive more traffic to your web site?
How many hours have you spent....
-tweaking your meta tag's keywords and webpage descriptions?
-creating doorway and hallway pages?
-analyzing keyword density on your webpages?
-resubmitting your webpages to the major search engines?
-monitoring your positioning on Alta Vista?
How much money have you spent on software tools, courses and ebooks to help you learn how to drive more targeted traffic to your website?
How many classified ads have you placed to attract more targeted traffic to your web site?
How about banner impressions?
Did you bid for the keywords on GOTO.com that would bring more targeted traffic to your web site?
And so on......
Am I implying this money and time was not well spent. NO, absolutely not. We need to drive targeted traffic to our web sites.
However, what I am wondering is that given you succeed with driving more targeted traffic to your website...is your website's content compelling enough to keep your visitors interested in staying around for awhile, purchasing your products, and bookmarking your site for future visits?
Did you spend half the amount of time and money creating a "Destination" website, one that visitors bookmark and come back to over and over again? Or is your website one more disappointing dead end for visitors?
For instance......
Does your website provide compelling benefit rich content? Is your content original and hard to find elsewhere?
Do you offer something free to your visitor that is useful to them? Is this the same giveaway they can get at many of your competitors websites?
Do you offer your visitors a free ezine, or a free autoresponder, or a free email account, or free search engine submission?
Can your visitors join an online community by participating in your discussion board?
Do you lose your visitors to outside links you imbed in your content? Or do you use the HTML "target" feature to keep the windows for the outside links opening up without leaving your webpage?(see http://wealthinmind.com/htmltarget.html for an example)
Is your content fresh, timely, and germane to your website's theme?
Can a visitor navigate your website with ease? Do they reach any link on any of your webpages with no way to get back, or not knowing why they arrived there?
Do you give away much more then you expect to receive in return on your website?
Do your visitors find what they expect when they arrive at your website? Is there benefit rich content on the subject they were looking for when they clicked on your link?
Are your visitors bombarded with gyrating banners screaming at them to buy products that are totally unrelated to what they came looking for?
You get my point.....
Simply stated.... if you succeed in driving massive amounts of visitors to your website, most of them will not buy what you are selling if you do not capture their attention with the "Content" you offer them.
Nothing else will compel your visitors to buy except the way in which you use content on your website.
Free Content is still "KING" on the Internet. Information is still the main reason people get on the Internet. Load your website with free compelling, timely, quality content which is easy to access and offers immediate benefits, and your visitors will hang around and look forward to returning.
By all means I would encourage you to continue your efforts to drive more targeted traffic to your website, but first design a welcoming website that invites your visitor to come in, reach for their cup of Starbucks coffee and stay awhile.
If your visitors find something of value when they arrive at your website, they will surely add your website to their bookmarks or favorites.
Your visitors are more likely to buy something you are selling on their return visit, so give them a good reason to come back.
Good luck Online!
MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE
Above All Create a Solid Foundation Copyright 2000 William N Hodges, used by permission.
Five years ago I visited a business acquaintance who had just built a new home for a little over a million dollars. In the past, I had been in homes in that area, costing substantially more that did not have the crystal chandeliers, fine woodwork, and Italian marble his home did. The morning sun coming through the stained glass windows on the eastern wall of the house was beautiful. I complimented him on his apparent negotiating skills and his ability to get a real bargain.
This year I visited the same house and noticed a few flaws beginning to show up in the once grandiose structure. I think it is important at this point for you to realize that I go to places to see people-not things. For me to notice whether things are good or bad, they have to be unusual. You couldn't help but notice these problems. The doors no longer swung freely. They bound when opened or closed. The ceiling had several cracks, and it was obvious that several more areas had been patched. The stained glass window had been removed.
I commented to my host about missing the beauty of his stained glass windows, and that's when he began to tell me his tale of woe. It seems that the owner's foundation was not what it should have been. It was now settling unevenly and wreaking havoc upon the rest of the house. The stained glass had been removed because the warp of the window frame was so bad it threatened to destroy the pane. I soon found out that all of the problems I had noticed earlier were a direct result of this substandard foundation.
Who do we blame for this condition the builder, the architect, or maybe the building inspectors? In this instance, we have to blame the homeowner. My client, against the advice of his architect, his builder and even the building inspector, decided to skimp on the foundation-doing only the minimum required by code. He reasoned that if you couldn't see, it didn't matter. Boy, was he wrong! And he is paying a severe price for his foolishness now. He would gladly trade all of the woodwork, tile, and stained glass for a firmer foundation. In fact, he might have to. The cost of shoring up the foundation of an existing house is almost out of reach. But if he doesn't do it, the house will continue to deteriorate and lose even more of it's value.
The moral of this story is that whether it is houses or lives, it is imperative that we make sure we have a firm foundation. We must not skimp. A few dollars spent on such things as a college class or technical training now will serve much better than buying a new car that will rust out in a couple of years. Once we build a solid base, we can, as time and resources permit, add all the extras we wish. You are the architect, builder, and building inspector of your life. How good is your foundation?
