Q. Everything written on the Internet in wide open. How do we keep others from ruining our reputations if they become unhappy with us? (Chuck S.)

A. Don't ever doubt how important your reputation is to you. In fact, a "good" reputation isn't good enough. As a professional, you'll need to have a shining reputation. However, your actions will speak louder than the words of anyone else. One professional always recognizes another. On the Internet, this is usually done through email communication.

How do you treat other business owners? This is one of the highest areas of abuse on the Internet. It's not only unprofessional but, downright dumb to treat email from other business owners - who may be trying to establish a business relationship with you - as "spam." Yes - you do have to use some selectivity, but you can't do that if you refuse to even scan through the email that comes in.

Professionals respect each other - work together - and grow together. I've said this before but it bears repeating. Ignoring email without even the least attention to what it might offer you - and not returning phone calls - is the epitome of amateur behavior.

You may have something that will help my business or make me money - why would I blow you off? What if AOL, Microsoft, and Netscape had each believed they were so important that they didn't need to respond to each other? How important were any of them when they first started? The bottom line is - you never know who may be a valuable contact somewhere down the road to success.

Ignoring the email of others with whom you have agreed to work - is even worse!

If you are involved in any kind of project with another online business owner, you have certain responsibilities. There may, or may not, be an enforceable contract involved. Most likely, there wont be. Either way - it doesn't matter! You made some kind of agreement in the beginning!

Professionalism demands that this agreement be brought to conclusion! Either the agreement must be fulfilled - or it needs to be terminated. A professional doesn't terminate agreements by changing his/her email address or refusing to respond to correspondence on the matter. Professionals don't just disappear!

If we routinely handle ourselves in a professional manner, our reputations as professionals will stay intact. Any disputes to the contrary will soon be forgotten.

HEY! You're Talking About Me! by "Wild Bill" Montgomery

Until your visitors, prospects or customers realize this fact you are doomed!

Persons in sales will call this "Self Qualifying" or "Attention and Desire", but what it comes down to is getting me to realize that the point that you are trying to get across applies to directly to me. None of your finely written ads or award winning sales copy will touch me until I know that your message is about me. In today's world everyone from the house wife/husband to top executives have learned to ignore ads and commercials. We have to or we'd all be in bankruptcy court. If your message doesn't say "Yo, wake up, this is you!", I just don't see it. Think of it like this:

You're in a crowded restaurant. At your table and all the tables around you there are conversations taking place. Of course you cannot listen to them all. You automatically filter out what doesn't pertain to you. As you are focused on the one conversation in front of you and completely unaware that you are filtering out everything else, you faintly hear "Your Name" from across the room. You didn't notice this person before, but now you are straining to hear the conversation. Until your message does this for me, I certainly won't notice you, and I'm willing to bet most others in my target group won't either.

How can you let me know that you are talking about me in your advertising or material?

One way is to ask me a specific question to which I must answer yes. You must be able to do one of the following for me: Solve a problem or Help my situation. Describe a situation that I would have no choice but saying "HEY! You're Talking About Me!" Speak directly at me by starting a question with words like "Is Your......", "Does Your......", "Are You......" or "Do You.....", so that I have no choice but to answer "yes, this is me!"

To give you the most practical of examples, I'll tell you how somebody got their point across to me.

The last two years I have been putting in anywhere from 70-90 hour work weeks between my online and offline work. Since both involve me sitting in a chair in front of a monitor, I have gained a little weight and am not in as good shape as I would like to be because I'm just not as physically active as I was. Driving home one morning after being up for 36 hours or so, working of course, I was so tired I was sore. I heard (something like) this come over the radio:

Are you feeling exhausted? Having trouble sleeping? Gaining Weight? Would you like to feel better?

Bang! It hits me.... Hey! You're Talking About Me!

This particular radio ad was for a local health spa. Now, I have never been the member of a health spa, never lifted weights, never worked out, outside of the required exercise and running in the Army, and that was years ago. I would never have considered a health spa before. I'm not into that kind of thing. But, because of their approach, I saw a value in what they were saying. I connected. This might be what I need to feel better physically and mentally. Needless to say, I and my wife both are members of this health spa now. We go three times a week and you know what......They were right, I feel better!

One of the greatest responsibilities we have is to support ourselves and others in living at our highest and best. Whether we're parents, partners, friends or leaders, it's incumbent upon us to help others to live as close to their unique potential as we can.

With everything we say and do, we're influencing positively or negatively the people we care about. The ideal is to do this with consideration and intention. Here are ten ways you can help others see and realize the best that's within them.

1. Believe in Them We all have self-doubts from time to time. Our confidence is shaken. We lack the faith in our talents and skills to go for an important promotion or launch a new initiative. Having someone believe in you at these times is priceless. The stories of great men and women are saturated with examples of someone who believed in them even when they didn't fully believe in themselves.

2. Encourage Them "You can do it." "I know you can." These are words that are all-too-infrequently voiced. Sincere encouragement can go a long way in helping someone stay the course. The more specific you are, the better the results. "I remember when you got through your slump last year and ended up winning the sales contest. I'm willing to bet that you'll do even better this time."

3. Expect a Lot We're often told not to get our hopes up. We're encouraged to have REALISTIC expectations. But when it comes to helping others operate at their best, we sometimes have to up-level our expectations. This can be taken to extremes, but there are many times when a teacher, a parent or even a boss has required more of us than we thought we were capable. And we've risen to the challenge which enabled us to see further than before.

4. Tell the Truth And tell it with compassion. We often avoid telling the hard truth because we don't want to upset anyone. We want to be NICE. But telling the truth is a loving act. You may be the only person who can or will say to another what needs to be said. And you can confront someone without being combative. 5. Be a Role Model One of the best ways we influence is by our own actions. Who we are speaks much more loudly than what we say. Don't think that people aren't watching you. They are. And they're registering everything about you consciously and unconsciously. We automatically emulate our role models. And we're ALL role models to someone so let's be good ones.

6. Share Yourself Too often, we miss the value of sharing our failings. We don't want to be vulnerable so we hold back. In doing so, we deprive others of our experience, our learning and our humanity. When you share from your own experience÷especially your failures you increase empathy, you're more approachable and you increase your relatability to others.

7. Challenge Them The word "challenge" has some negative connotations. The meaning we're using here is, "a test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking." We all need to be challenged from time to time. Doing it for another is an art form. Go too far and it will backfire. Go too easy and you will appear patronizing. Remind people of their commitment to being their best and state your challenge. "I challenge you to overcome these unimportant opinions and get on with the real task at hand, get the job done, make the commitment, etc."

8. Ask Good Questions A good therapist or coach doesn't tell their clients what to do. They ask good questions in order for the client to understand themselves better, to get clear on what the issue is and from there to make good choices. You can do the same. By asking elegant questions, you cause people to think and come up with solutions. They'll appreciate it. Gary Lockwood has a good article about this called Asking Intelligent Questions with Impact.

9. Acknowledge Them You find what you're looking for. If you're looking for the best in someone, you'll see it. If you're looking for their failings, you'll see those. Catch people doing things right and tell them. When we acknowledge the good deeds of others, they tend to do more of them. Write a note. Send a card. Give them a call. Praise them in front of others.

10. Spend Time with Them We love what we give our time to. By devoting your most precious resource (time) to another individual, you're showing them that you truly value them and your relationship with them. Invest time in your relationships; it's what life is made of.
