Today's feature writer has some good advice for us on relationship building...a core element to long-term success on the internet. Here are a few more ideas for making a good impression in our email communications:

Email - We all love it and hate it. It's going to be a very important part of our online businesses so we need to understand some of the basic rules of email marketing.

1. We all know that a smile or gesture can many times break the ice when meeting associates in person and the tone of your voice can set the stage over the phone. When marketing with email, you only have your words to get your message across. Therefore, you must choose your words wisely! Many a misunderstanding has occurred from the way an email message was read.

2. Make sure your message is as clear and concise as possible. Proofread and spell check every message.

3. Whenever you possibly can, use the recipient's name in the greeting of the message and in the body as well, if it is a long message.

4. Always answer incoming messages within 24 to 48 hours. With all this lightening fast technology, potential clients expect a lightening fast reply.

5. Format your messages so any email reader can read it. No HTML, columns, etc. Hit a manual return at the end of each line (approx. 65 characters per line). Also quote any pertinent information when replying.

6. Show your interest in your potential client by referencing their URL, ezine, or other identifying factors. Let them know that you are genuinely interested in doing business with them.

7. Write as if the person you are corresponding to is sitting right in front of you. Give your message a little personality.

8. Start building your email list NOW! When handled correctly, your email list can be a gold mine!

These may seem like trivial points, but they can be a very crucial part of you business. It is very easy to forget we are communicating with live human beings and not a computer screen.

Five things you must do to make money on the Net

Do you know what most people fail to realize on the net and in all traditional businesses? They fail to realize that their customers/visitors are their greatest assets. The moment an individual comes in contact with you or your business you must treat them with respect and be willing to ad benefits to his or her life. That is really what they are all looking for.. benefits.. not necessarily your products or service. Let me give you five key points that goes a long way in the success of your internet business.

1. Get to know your visitors or customers. When a visitor comes to your site he or she is looking for interaction with you via words, audio, and pictures. There must be a way for them to communicate with you. You must capture as many email addresses as possible because this will put you in the position to interact with and get to know them and what they need from you.

You must have as many ways for them to contact you as possible. By all means have your phone number on your site and try to answer the phone yourself every time a customer wants to speak to you. This is vital. Use your newsletter to keep in contact with your list. The more you talk to them the more they will feel comfortable with you and they will begin to trust in you.

2. Build trust with your prospective customers. This goes without saying. If your visitors or list members don't trust you they would not buy from you. You must build a rapport with them. Get to know them and let them get to know you. This can be done through your sales letter stating the benefits of your products.

In presenting your benefits you must also have testimonials from some happy customers for them to identify with. Most of the time your word alone is not enough to convince the customer that you're legit. In everything you sell to your customers you must always give value.

3. Give value to your customers. Do you want to stay in business and service those same customers forever? Or do you want to try and scam someone and lose the most precious commodity any business has? You must give your customers value for their money. As a matter of fact you must give them more than they are expecting.

This is a very important factor that a lot of merchants forget, and the ones who are practicing it are making a killing. People will stay with businesses that treat them like kings and queens. Give them more than they are paying for and help them to succeed.

4. Help your customers to succeed in whatever they are trying to accomplish. Don't just take their money, get to know them and ask them how you could help them achieve their goals. By doing this you are building long-term relationships. In business, good relationships can bring in millions of dollars through networking.

This is another powerful concept you must implement in your day-to-day routines. If your customers are happy with you and you are helping them succeed they will tell the world and the world will come knocking at your door. Be ready.

5. Thank your customers or visitors for patronizing your business. These two simple words carry a lot of weight. Psychologically speaking, people will do most anything for you if they know you appreciate them. You can show them your appreciation by simply saying "THANK YOU" and perhaps giving them something for free, not hard huh? But you would be surprised how many business people fail to implement these incredibly simple factors in their businesses. Maybe pride or ego gets in the way. Don't let this happen to you. Ego or pride can't bring in the dough. Give it up and get on with the business of pleasing people. This is what pays!

To succeed in any business, whether it be on or offline, you will do well to remember to implement these factors. Give it a try. You'll love the outcome.

Charity Begins at the Home Office by Donna Schwartz Mills

Most societies have a tradition of giving to the needy; We're told to do so by our parents, teachers and clergy. It is the right thing to do -- and it can also be a smart business strategy.

A couple of years ago, a restaurateur from San Francisco decided to open shop down south in one of the most competitive, high-rent districts in the country: Beverly Hills.

The failure rate for new restaurants is pretty high. Much depends on establishing a loyal clientele as quickly as possible, and Helene An did not know *anyone* in her new city. Yet, her restaurant -- Crustacean -- was an immediate hit upon opening and is still one of the most popular places to see and be seen in notoriously fickle Beverly Hills.

An knew that the restaurant's dramatic decor would make an impression, and she had faith in the French/Vietnamese recipes her family brought with them when they came to the U.S. But she understood that having a good product is not enough for any new venture. She needed to connect with her target customers before her grand opening.

"I decided that if I wanted to have friends, I would be a friend. I would become a friend to the community."

So An became an active participant in local causes and charities. She gave money, offered Crustacean as a site for fund-raisers and donated gift certificates as auction and raffle prizes. She joined the boards of several of the area's non-profit organizations. Her restaurant earned a reputation as the city's most philanthropic.

The result was immediate awareness and visibility -- and a network that includes most of the movers and shakers of the community.

While most home business owners are unable to match An's generosity dollar for dollar (her annual charity budget is over $100,000), her method will work for a business of any size:

Instead of just buying a raffle ticket, how about donating one of your products to serve as a prize?

If your business is a service, make up some gift certificates and give it to that non-profit's silent auction.

Make time for PTA meetings and volunteer to help out on school activities.

Sponsor a local children's team -- your business name and logo will be seen throughout the community.
