Web words need a different approach by Cheryl Paquin
As the number of commercial Web sites explodes daily, a whole new avenue of communication is opening. More and more, the information we glean from print-media sources, appears in digital form online.
However, physically reading a print publication and an Internet article are two separate entities. In order to capture the burgeoning online audience, there are a few simple tips to remember.
First, it has been said that fifteen seconds is the maximum a user will endure waiting for a page to load. When disseminating information on the Internet, lack of speed is the greatest killer. For readers not interested in graphic content, providing a text-only page is an alternative.
Text pages, not weighed down by images, load quickly. With HTML coding it is possible to jazz up pages with the use of background color and font color. Using light background-colors and dark fonts ensure readability.
Having enticed readers to your page with quick-loading action, it is important to remember that how the reader views your publication is limited by the dimensions of his monitor. He cannot scan the whole article in one take and normally, must scroll down the screen. If you must use long pages, hotlink relevant subheadings so the reader can "jump" through the article. Providing simple navigational tools lends to reader comfort, making a lengthy article more inviting.
Above all, avoid making your reader scroll from left to right to catch the end of the line. Nothing is more frustrating than having to scroll across screen, then back for the beginning of the next line. Checking your page at different resolutions is essential. Remember, what looks fantastic on your 800 x 600 19" monitor, may not look quite as good on your neighbor's 14 inch at 640 x 480 resolution.
The use of "white space" is important when reading a printed article, or one on a monitor. A reader is traditionally accustomed to white-space margins as he reads from left to right. It is important to include margins in your Web page. Facing a screen with text running from one side to the other with no reprieve to rest the eye is daunting.
However, using the "blockquote" HTML tag in your code allows a margin between your words and the screen edge. This is a simple tag greatly enhancing readability.
Writing style is also critical. With so much information at hand, you only have the reader's attention for a very short time. The first few paragraphs of your article should hook your audience. Active, short, sharp sentences capture them; long-winded, passive sentences do not.
The Internet is about receiving information instantaneously, delaying your reader in his quest is fatal.

"Let's see... I've got a website I poured my heart and soul into. Although I make improvements to it all the time, and it's always in a state of "never done," I'm pleased with my creation...."
As time and labor consuming as website creating is, getting the darn thing up and functional is only the very beginning. The only reason to put a website up on the internet is, after all, to share yourself, your knowledge, your experience, and wares with the piece of the cyber world pie that is also interested in similar concepts. So, how in the heck do you let others know you're there, and most importantly, that they'll benefit by visiting your website?
Delving into internet marketing "how to" material can be daunting. There's so much to do and precious few hours to do it. Some give up before they've hardly begun after becoming overwhelmed with the awesome responsibility they ultimately find out an internet business REALLY is.
OH MY GOSH... ALL THIS???
HTML, forms, CGI, Java, search engines, mirror pages, submitting, meta tags, redirects, graphics, signature files, opportunities galore, blasters, content, contests, banners, buttons, pop-ups, ad bars, browsers, follow-ups, autoresponders, free stuff everywhere, classifieds, message boards, ezines, newsgroups, mailing lists, spam, spam-free, reciprocal links, this method, that program.... AHHHHH !!!!
No wonder some give up after only a few months! With so many marketing methods to choose from, you may think you have to do it all to be successful, and then end up so scattered and unfocused that you do none of them completely or well.
BUILD SUCCESS BY FOCUSING
Based on the knowledge that you possess RIGHT NOW, this moment, ask yourself what aspects of website creating and sharing excite you the most. To start, make a list of 5 (you'll expand on this list later, after implementing and habitizing the first two or three).
Look at your list and number the choices in order of your own interest level. Which would you MOST like to learn more about and implement, before any others? That's your number 1.
Out of the four that are left, which one is next on your level of joy or interest? And so on.
ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT
Give yourself permission to build your solid internet business from the ground up, starting with the foundation, brick by brick. The taller the building, the stronger the foundation and structure need to be. Give yourself permission to take your time. Give up the "overnight riches or nothing" mentality. Your future total financial independence depends on it!
START AT THE PERFECT PLACE, THE BEGINNING!
Whatever is number 1 on your list, begin to implement it. Search, read, learn all you can on that subject, then carry that idea through your entire website or daily/weekly internet activities. FOCUS. PERSIST. COMPLETE. PERFECT.
Now, through the above process, you suddenly notice, out of the blue, that your number one has naturally become an integral part of your website and the way you naturally do things. It's become a habit pattern within you AND your website! Congratulate yourself! Throw a party!
Then move onto choice number 2....
Search, read, learn, implement, FOCUS, PERSIST, COMPLETE, PERFECT... BOOM! HABIT! Party time!
Onto choice number 3.... You get the picture.
By now, what has your focused persistence and due diligence given you? Take a look at what's "happened;" Long before you originally envisioned upon embarking on this new project of projects, you became a PRO! You're making money, you're getting more confident and skillful with each passing month, which leads to even MORE increase. How about that?! It's time to quit your day job!
You continue the same process, always adding the next step to your list upon completion of the one before, keeping up with the ever changing internet in a focused, disciplined way, and... egads! Now you've become a MASTER!
There's always more to learn; newer, streamlined twists on the old, new software, ideas, innovative techniques to utilize and teach.... What level of Internet webMASTER will you attain? What are your hopes, wishes, and dreams, and how high is the sky? Only YOU can define your limits or lack of them.

THE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY MAZE Have you been thinking about starting your own home-based business? If you're like most people with the same desire, not only are you having difficulty determining WHERE to start, you're also confused about WHAT to start. You have read so many business opportunity classifieds, received so many offers in the mail, watched so many late night money-making infomercials, and listened to so many sales presentations that your head is swimming.
NOW IT'S MY TURN I'm going to introduce you to what could be your greatest business opportunity ever. I assure you that you have never seen anything else exactly like this anywhere at any price. You and you alone would control its success. Best of all, it's something you already have which means it wouldn't cost you a penny to get it started. Permit me to introduce you to YOU!!!
That's right - YOU! You, the one-of-a-kind individual. You, the architect of your own dreams and the captain of your own success. You, the one true motivating force behind your actions. YOU! You have your own unique personality, skills and knowledge and because of this, you may very well be a business opportunity waiting to happen.

They took their KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS and combined them with a BURNING DESIRE and BELIEF IN THEMSELVES. They did not wait around for someone else to give them an opportunity. Instead, each of them was a business opportunity waiting to happen, and, oh, did they ever happen.
"AM I?" Are you a business opportunity waiting to happen? A little self-examination might help you decide.
Start with a serious assessment of your knowledge and skills. What are your strengths? What do you do really well? Can you turn this into a home-based business? Do you know anyone else who has? How are they doing at it? Could you improve upon what they do? Write all of this down.
Now concentrate on what you most enjoy doing in life. If you could do just one thing for a living and make all the money you'd ever need doing it, what would that be? CAN you make a living doing it? Are there others doing it? If you can't make a living doing it, is there something you can do that is related to it? For example, if your favorite activity in life is golf but you know that you could never make the pro tour, what business could you start that would allow you to make a comfortable living while you spend your days thinking about and doing something involving golf? Again, make sure that you put pen to paper as you do this important exercise.
Is this all you need to know? No. These questions form only a starting point from which you can and must proceed into more intense research. But these questions can certainly serve to get your creative juices flowing and help you decide what type of home-based business is right for you. Besides, it's a lot of fun to just sit down and dream of the many possibilities of a life spent doing what you enjoy most.
SO, ARE YOU? Are you indeed a business opportunity waiting to happen? Do you have something locked up inside you which if released and developed into a business would have people knocking down your door to purchase what you're offering? Could your success in the business you create be a future cover story for "Entrepreneur" magazine? Perhaps there has never been a better time than now for you to find out.
