This week's feature writer has a great new strategy for us to utilize in obtaining some substantial traffic. While you're reviewing your site and coming up with original keywords, you might want to consider how your content stands up to this challenge:
3 Ways to Spike Your Site's Content by Monique Harris
Yeah, yeah, yeah... we all know that "great content" holds the interest of visitors who have the ability to click, click their way around the Web. But let's face it, not all content is created equally.
Most content sucks. That's a point blank fact. You know it. I know it. That's why we're such a click-happy society.
Great content is no longer a well-written article, or a list of frequently asked questions, or links galore. Visitors have grown much more savvy. The question is, has your content evolved?
Here are 3 ways to make your content more spicy...
1) Be controversial.
A radio talk show host rarely becomes famous, unless they have some off-the-wall, or cocky attitude. Entertainers who dress wildly, often get more attention than those who don't. The lesson to learn here?
Sometimes you gotta be a little wild to get your point across. (Especially if you run a one-person operation, and you want to be noticed.)
Do you have an unusual opinion or theory about something? Instead of writing nice, neat little tip articles in your e-zine, talk about your competitors... talk about things happening in your industry... let your readers know if you think something is bad.
The more honest you are, the more people will love you.
2) Add more of what your visitors want.
The only way to know what your visitors are truly interested in, is by monitoring their behavior as they visit your site.
In other words, put some kind of tracking program on your site, and examine the stats daily. A tracking program will tell you which pages are the most popular... how long your visitors stay on a particular page... and so on.
Knowing this information will allow you to include more popular features on your site.

3) Use a multimedia element.
I recently started a site that features RealAudio tips on a daily basis. One thing I quickly noticed - (after examining the stats from my tracking program) - is how much people enjoy audio, versus text.
Three weeks after putting the site up, almost 15% of my visitors had re-visited the site between 10-24 times. It's hard to generate that type of interest from straight text articles.
You can follow in my footsteps, and do a daily 1-minute tip. (I also have 12-minute interviews.) Or you can read your print articles aloud, and put the audio files on your site.

Pay Per Click Traffic

The pay-per-click (PPC) search engines can be an excellent source of traffic for your web site. The great thing about the pay-per- click engines is that you can get dirt cheap, targeted traffic to your site with minimal effort (the best part of all!). On top of that, your listings appear in a couple of days at most... Sometimes instantly, depending on the engine. Let's talk about the strategy behind a successful pay-to-play campaign, shall we?
There are some tricks to the trade you should take into account when launching your pay-per-click campaign. The first (and by far the most important) step in your PPC campaign is choosing the keywords you want to target. Do your research well, and you might come up with a few good (targeted) terms or phrases that are searched on a lot with a low price for a top listing.
That is really the key to tons of cheap traffic. If you go for a common phrase such as "home business", "making money", or "internet marketing", you will pay top dollar for a top 10 listing (in Goto anyway). However, if you go for a phrase like "earning money at home" you might get a #1 listing at a low price, but no one is searching on that phrase so you won't get any traffic (besides, who the heck wants to "earn" money from home!?!).
So, the trick is to hunt down terms or phrases that are targeted, low cost, and searched on a decent amount. Find out how many times a term/phrase was searched on last month at goto - http://inventory.go2.com/inventory/Search_Suggestion.jhtml . Spend a lot of time there just doing research and finding some good search terms/phrases to target. Get creative, because this is where it will really count. A helpful thing to do is just type in a generic word such as "business" and this neat-o little tool will bring up every phrase searched on that had the word business somewhere in it (there's a lot of them).
After you've found some ripe keywords to go for, the next part of the puzzle is entering your listings. Remember to put the search term in the title. That's what people are searching on so that's what will catch their eye when the listings appear.
Also include the term in your enticing description. I recommend trying to get their attention with your title and lure them in with your description. Get creative and you'll attract a ton of click-happy web surfers.
There is another strategy you could use but it's quite time consuming. What you'd do is spend maybe an hour or more at the Goto keyword research tool getting creative and collecting hundreds of rather obscure terms/phrases that are targeted, yet only searched on a few times per month. Let's say you set a minimum requirement of five times per month. You figure with a number one listing for a penny you might get two of those five people to click on your listing. Well, if you collect 500 terms that fit the bill, that's another 1000 visitors to your site per month. A lot of work up front, but it should pay off over time.
There is a lot of traffic to be had from the pay-per-click search engines. Start your PPC campaign today, because this is the wave of the cyber-searching future. Just look at Inktomi, charging to have your site spidered regularly. I think you will see a bunch of different experiments and hybrids of machine and pay-for- performance engines over the next few years. Remember, the big thing with the PPC's is your keywords. Spend the bulk of your time on this most crucial aspect of getting a ton of pay-per-click traffic. You want your terms to be searched on a good amount, targeted, and cheap. Just put your thinking cap on and I'm confident that before long you'll be one pay-per-click happy camper!

Believe In Yourself

I heard a story recently that I cannot verify but will share with you anyway. I seems that a professor stood before his class of 20 senior organic biology students and was about to hand out the final exam. But before doing so, he said, "I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after summer. So that no one gets their GPA messed up because they might have been celebrating a bit too much this week, anyone who would like to opt out of the final exam today will receive a B for the course."
There was much rejoicing as students got up, passed by the professor to thank him and sign out on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Any one else? This is your last chance." One final student rose and took the offer.
The professor closed the door and took attendance of the three students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourself," he said. "You all have "A's." Three happy students off to medical school. I don't know about you but hope my doctor would have been one of the three students still sitting in the class. These students had confidence in their ability to reach a little higher than the other 17 who left the room and cared enough to reach for the best rather than settle for less. Come to think of it, I guess that is what I want in my auto mechanic, my barber, my teachers, and everyone else that I trust parts of my life to on a day-to-day basis.
If we expect others to believe in themselves, can we display less if we hope others will have confidence in us?
One way that we can display confidence in ourselves is to use positive conversation. Simply changing a sentence from, "I will try to do that." to " I will take care of that." can make a great difference in whether others see us as self-confident or tentative. Some other tentative statements along the same lines are: "I might be able to." "I think I can." "Maybe I can get to that." Or the famous "I guess I can do it." All of these hedge on your ability to do the project and may cause the other party to doubt both your capability and commitment to succeed. If you truly plan to complete the assignment, why start out by planting the seeds of doubt in others' minds with these half-hearted statements. For that matter, since our mind acts on what we tell it, why tell it you have doubts in your ability to succeed?
Think before you speak. What are your words conveying about you? The next time someone asks you to work on a project, listen closely to the words that are coming out of your mouth. If you accept the assignment, be positive in the way you approach it. "Yes I will do that" will always beat "I will give it a try."
Many goals are scary when we first look at them, but just like the three student who got "A's, life sometimes has a way of rewarding those who stay in the game. When you drop the shield of tentative words, you are much more likely to succeed. When you say, "I can!" your mind will work hard to make an honest person of you and help you to achieve your goal.
